Alpha-Arbutin: Hyperpigmentation Obliterator

You could be forgiven for not knowing what alpha-arbutin is, after all you may never have even heard of it before, despite it considered to be one of the most advanced natural ingredients in skincare.

Aqua-arbutin is a botanical based extract found in the bearberry plant. Its natural skin brightening properties and its effectiveness in treating hyperpigmentation, age spots and acne scars make it a much sought after ingredient.

It is often paired with other ingredients with skin brightening properties, such as kojic acid and vitamin C. The water soluble ingredient also protects skin from the effects if UV rays.

How does it work?

The colour of it is all down to cells called melanosomes – tiny pockets containing a natural chemical called melanin. Although we all have roughly the same number of these melanosomes, the larger they are and the more melanin they contain, the darker your skin looks. Unfortunately, it is this melanin that also causes hyperpigmentation.

Alpha-arbutin works by supressing the enzymes that stimulate tyrosinase, the process that produces melanin when stimulated by UV light, thus preventing melanin production and reducing hyperpigmentation.

How often can it be used?

It is gentle enough to be used day and night as art of a good skin care regimen. Results can be seen in a few weeks, but it is definitely worth sticking with for long-lasting results. It is gentle enough to be used on all skin types and tones.
