It’s never too late to establish a good skincare regimen that works!

How well do you take care of your skin? Do you regularly cleanse, tone and moisturise? You might think that you don’t need to. Well think again! There is so much going on, not only on the outside, but also beneath the surface.

There are many factors that can impact on the health of skin, including things that we can see like the sun, pollution and injury, but also those we can’t see, like genes, hormones and bacterium. It really does go further than just skin deep.

Then there is the fact that dark skin contains more melanin than Caucasian skin which leaves it more susceptible to hyperpigmentation. It is therefore more important than ever to protect skin as much as possible.

But where do you start?

When selecting skincare products it is vital to select those suitable for your skin. Many women of colour make the mistake of thinking they can pick and choose from any skincare products on the market, but that really isn’t the case.

Products developed for Caucasian skin often undertreat or overtreat black skin and are simply ineffective when it comes to treating hyperpigmentation, which is why Emeilleurq has developed a truly inclusive skincare range that contains clinically proven, effective ingredients and complexes that are extremely effective on black skin, but also entirely safe for sensitive Caucasian skin.

Establishing a daily skincare routine

Once you have chosen the right products for your skin it’s time to get into a daily routine, ideally after showering. Avoid using loofahs and abrasive scrubs, especially if you are prone to acne or eczema. Also avoid heavy products that can clog pores and fragranced products that can irritate sensitive skin, increasing the occurrence and severity of hyperpigmentation.

  • Cleanse

Using a gentle cleanser massage it into the skin in small circular motions with clean fingertips before rinsing off with lukewarm water. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel making sure not to rub the skin. The Emeilleurq range features four cleansers: the Lipid Facial Cleanser thoroughly cleanses the skin without stripping its natural moisture balance; the Hyaluronic Cleanser offers natural moisturising factors to optimise skin radiance and texture; the gently foaming Illuminating Kojic Cleanser targets lack of uniformity and is perfect for those with pigment concerns; and the Defensil Cleanser and Serum hydrates and nourishes the skin while providing intense barrier protection.

  • Tone

Soak a cotton pad with toner and wring out the excess liquid. Pat across the face paying extra attention to the forehead, nose and chin. Don’t be tempted to skip this step as toner removes residue, such as chlorine and minerals, left by tap water and helps skin retain moisture. There are two toners in the Emeilleurq range: the Illuminating Facial Toner is a radiance-enhancing toner that elevates hydration levels while targeting areas which lack in uniformity; and the Hyaluronic Toner hydrates, balances and protects skin, boosting the effectiveness of your skincare regimen.

  • Moisturise

Black skin loses moisture quicker than Caucasian skin, so to keep skin looking radiant and bright, gently massage a rehydrating moisturiser into the skin. There are four luxurious and hydrating moisturisers in the Emeilleurq range: the Mela Defense Cream is an active outdoor moisturiser which nourishes and protects skin from daily stresses and offers resistance to UV aggression; the Tetrapeptide Intensive Moisturiser firms and fortifies, resulting in radiant, more uniform skin; the Illuminating Peptide Creme optimises and balances skin tone and texture; and the Cascading Anti-Oxidant Crème is rich and powerful, helping to achieve a more nourished, hydrated and glowing complexion.

And finally…

Always wear sunscreen. As well as protecting skin from the sun’s harmful rays it can help to prevent hyperpigmentation from getting darker. Emeilleurq’s Dermal+ Defense Sunscreen is a mineral-based formula containing zinc oxide, a physical UV blocker that is effective for both UVA and UVB rays. It has a SPF of 55 and is gentle enough to use every day.
